reStart Family Shelterart Inc - Family Emergency Shelter
The Family Shelter provides room and board and support services for 10 families at a time. Originally founded in 1987 as one of the first family emergency shelters in Kansas City, the program has now evolved beyond offering just "emergency" services to become the entry point to our complete continuum of care for homeless families.

Services offered in the Family Shelter include employment and on-the-job training, housing assistance, life skills and financial literacy classes, mental health screenings, therapy for individuals, families and children, substance abuse recovery programs, health and nutritional education, art therapy, family field trips and recreational activities.
And this focus on helping families is achieving impressive results. In the first five months of 2012, of the 47 families who came to the Family Shelter:
-- 21 families have moved into permanent housing
-- 14 parents have enrolled in educational programs (GED, college, vocational education)
-- 28 heads of household have secured employment
Inclusivity for families in need:
-- Single parent families are welcome
-- Gay and lesbian parented families are welcome
-- Unmarried couples are welcome
-- Families are not required to vacate and re-enter daily
-- Parents are not required to be employed when they come to reStart -- we work with them to help them gain employment
