November: The Fight Against Hunger and Homelessness

Hunger and homelessness are not separate challenges. They are intertwined crises that thousands of our neighbors face every single day. When a family is unsure where their next meal will come from, it becomes nearly impossible to focus on securing housing, finding employment, or achieving long-term stability. During Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, we are reminded of just how urgent this work is and how many people are depending on us right now.

Every week, rising costs, shrinking benefits, and unexpected emergencies push more people in Kansas City to the edge. At reStart, we see how quickly food insecurity can spiral into homelessness. We also see how quickly your partnership can stop that spiral. Monthly donors empower us to intervene early, before hunger becomes homelessness, before crisis becomes displacement.

Each day, our team serves three hot meals to more than 120 people, including youth, individuals, and families experiencing homelessness. We deliver this care for just $3.65 per person per meal, a small cost with profound impact. Behind every meal is stability, dignity, and the promise of a new beginning.

But our responsibility cannot stop at meals alone.

True change requires a full housing continuum, one that prevents homelessness, supports people on the streets, guides families through shelter and transitional programs, and ultimately helps them secure safe, permanent homes. Through our upStart initiative, we are building new affordable housing for families who are too often left out of traditional options. And with the opening of our new Family Lodge, we will triple our capacity to shelter families in need, an expansion that simply cannot come soon enough.

This work is bold, and it is necessary. And it is only possible because of you. Our monthly donors form the backbone of reStart. Your steady commitment keeps our doors open, meals served, families housed, and life-changing services available. Most importantly, your generosity gives us the stability we need to plan and to walk alongside people at every step of their housing journey.

As we observe Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, I invite you to take a stand with us. Your monthly gift is more than support. It is a lifeline. It nourishes bodies, strengthens families, and ensures that every person who comes to our door is met with safety, dignity, and hope.

Together, we are building a more compassionate Kansas City, one where every person has the opportunity not just to survive, but to thrive.

With deep gratitude,
