August- Back to School, Back to Stability: Why Housing Determines Educational Success

August brings excitement across Kansas City. Backpacks are filled, first-day outfits are chosen, teachers prepare their classrooms, and families look forward to a new year of learning, growth, and possibility.

But for families experiencing homelessness, back-to-school season can bring uncertainty instead of excitement.

How do you concentrate in class when you did not sleep well the night before?

How do you finish homework without a quiet place to study?

How do you arrive on time when you do not know where your family will be staying from one night to the next?

Housing instability affects nearly every part of a child’s education. It can disrupt attendance, make transportation unreliable, interrupt relationships with teachers and classmates, and contribute to academic, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Even the most resilient child will struggle to learn when their most basic needs are uncertain.

Housing stability is the most important school supply a child can have.

That is why the opening of reStart’s new Family Lodge just a few weeks ago is such an important moment for Kansas City. For the first time, 45 families with children can have privacy, safety, and stability while they work toward permanent housing.

Each family has more than a bed. They have their own suite—a place to unpack their belongings, establish a bedtime routine, prepare for school, complete homework, and begin rebuilding a sense of normalcy. Children can wake up knowing where they will sleep that night. Parents can focus on employment, housing, healthcare, and their children’s needs without facing the daily crisis of finding shelter.

At the Family Lodge, reStart helps families establish the conditions children need to succeed: consistent sleep, reliable school transportation, space to study, access to tutoring and educational support, healthy meals and snacks, emotional support, and a long-term plan for stable housing.

This fall, reStart will welcome three times as many children into safe, stable housing as we have ever served at one time. That is an extraordinary step forward—and it creates an extraordinary opportunity for our community to help.

You can support children at the Family Lodge by donating nutritious food and after-school snacks, providing backpacks, lunch boxes and school supplies, sponsoring haircuts, or making a financial gift to help families move from homelessness to permanent housing.

These may seem like simple things. But to a child walking into a new classroom, a full backpack, a good night’s sleep, a fresh haircut, and the knowledge that their family has a safe place to return to can make all the difference.

A child should never have to worry about where they will sleep during the first week of school—or any week of the year.

The Family Lodge is more than a new building. It is a place where families can breathe, children can learn, and new beginnings can take shape. Together, we can make this the school year when more Kansas City children have the stability, confidence, and opportunity they deserve.
