February: From the Desk of Stephanie Boyer, CEO of reStart
February is a time to celebrate love, connection, and the incredible impact of kindness. Along with Valentine’s Day, this month also brings National Random Acts of Kindness Week—a powerful reminder of how small gestures can create life-changing ripples, especially for those experiencing homelessness.
February at reStart: Kindness Changes Lives
For our unhoused neighbors, a simple act of kindness can be transformational. A warm smile, a kind word, or a compassionate gesture can restore dignity and spark hope. At reStart, kindness is at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is not only to provide housing but also to uplift, support, and empower those facing housing instability, helping them build a path forward.
The Power of Being Seen
It’s easy to walk past someone in need, to avoid eye contact, to look the other way. But imagine how different the world would feel if every person felt truly seen. This month, we invite you to pause, acknowledge, and recognize our neighbors without homes. A simple moment of connection—meeting someone’s gaze, offering a greeting—can be the spark that helps them feel valued and not forgotten.
Kindness in Action
"For years, homelessness felt like a relentless storm, battering my spirit and leaving me adrift. Every day was a struggle to find shelter, food, and a sense of safety. But then, reStart's Healthy Blue Case Manager, Vincent extended a lifeline. The support I received—not just in finding a home but in gaining community, healthcare, and compassion—changed everything. Now, as I fight cancer, I have a place to call my own. A sanctuary where I can heal, rebuild, and dream again.”
This testimony is proof that kindness has the power to transform lives. And you can be part of that change. Whether it’s volunteering to serve a meal, painting a room, packing hygiene kits, donating clothing or simply sharing a warm smile, every act of kindness helps restore hope.
Right now, with ongoing uncertainties around federal grants, community support is more critical than ever. One simple yet powerful way to make a difference is by joining our Turn the Key KC campaign. Becoming a monthly donor helps unlock doors and create stability for individuals and families in Kansas City. Just imagine—if 250 people committed to giving $10 each month, we could fund our kitchen budget for an entire year!
Will You Be Part of the Change?
This month, as we celebrate kindness, we invite you to stand with us. Together, we can provide housing, nourishment, and hope for our unhoused neighbors. Every act of kindness counts—because when we lift others, we uplift our entire community.
Let’s make a difference, one kind act at a time.
With gratitude,
Stephanie Boyer
