April: From the Desk of Stephanie Boyer, CEO of reStart
Across the country, nonprofits are adapting to change and rising to the moment—and reStart is no exception. As conversations around federal funding shift, one thing remains crystal clear: our commitment to the people of Kansas City will never waver.
April at reStart: Standing Strong—Together
Right now, about 43% of our funding comes from government sources like HUD, HHS, and the VA. These dollars directly fuel the work we do every day, providing housing, healthcare access, case management, and life-changing support services for our neighbors in need.
But the landscape is changing. And it’s calling on all of us to respond—with strength, creativity, and unity.
Where Things Stand
Although no official funding cuts have been announced, we’re mindful of the signs. In early April, the U.S. House passed a federal budget that projects steep reductions in community development grants, potentially as high as 77.7%. These programs are often lifelines for affordable housing, health care, and neighborhood stability.
And because most of these funds are reimbursed after services are delivered, uncertainty about the future adds a layer of financial strain for nonprofits like ours. That’s why building varied and community-powered support is more important now than ever.
Choosing Innovation Over Fear
At reStart, we’re not waiting on what might happen—we’re taking action. We’re building new partnerships, pursuing fresh funding opportunities, and tapping into the creativity and generosity of our incredible community. And we need you with us.
Together, We Rise
We may not control what happens in Washington, but here in Kansas City, we have something even more powerful: each other.
Your time, your voice, your creativity, and your generosity are what make reStart’s work possible. With your support, we can continue building a community where every neighbor has a safe place to call home.
Let’s keep showing up, lifting one another, and moving forward—together.
With gratitude,
Stephanie Boyer
