July- The Freedom of Home: A Historic July for Kansas City

Every Fourth of July, we gather with family and friends to celebrate the freedoms that define our nation. Fireworks fill the sky, flags wave proudly, and we reflect on the opportunities that come with living in a country built on the promise of hope and possibility.

But this Independence Day, I find myself thinking about another kind of freedom—one that doesn't come from a declaration or a celebration, but from something much more fundamental.

The freedom that comes with having a place to call home.

Housing is more than four walls and a roof. It is safety. It is stability. It is dignity. It is the foundation that allows children to learn, parents to work, and families to dream about tomorrow instead of simply surviving today.

When a family has a home, they gain freedom from fear. Freedom from uncertainty. Freedom from wondering where they will sleep tonight or whether their children will be able to stay in the same school tomorrow.

At reStart, we see every day that housing changes everything.

That is why this July is one of the most significant months in our organization's 45-year history.

On July 9, we will celebrate the ribbon-cutting of our first upStart Duplexes in the Indian Mound Neighborhood. These newly constructed homes represent much more than new buildings—they are the beginning of a bold vision to create affordable housing throughout Kansas City. Families will move into these permanent homes with the security of knowing they have a safe, stable place to build their future. These duplexes are the first step toward creating housing opportunities that will strengthen neighborhoods and provide lasting community assets for generations to come.

Then, on July 21, we will open the doors to our new Family Lodge, a transformational project that will provide an interim home for 45 families experiencing homelessness at a time. Every year, approximately 150 families—more than 600 children and adults—will find stability, hope, and comprehensive support within its walls.

For too long, we had to tell families there was simply no room. Last year alone, 718 families seeking shelter were turned away because our community lacked the capacity to meet the need.

Our new Family Lodge changes that.

It creates a place where parents can focus on finding employment, children can sleep peacefully and prepare for school, and families can work toward permanent housing with the support they need to succeed. Our model has consistently demonstrated that 98% of families move from homelessness into permanent stable housing, proving that when we invest in people and provide the right support, lives change.

These two ribbon cuttings represent more than milestones for reStart. They represent a new chapter for Kansas City.

One project provides permanent affordable housing that strengthens neighborhoods. The other provides temporary housing and support that helps families regain stability and move home as quickly as possible. Together, they demonstrate that solving homelessness requires a comprehensive housing continuum—and a community willing to invest in it.

As we celebrate reStart's 45th Anniversary, I am incredibly proud of what our team, our partners, our donors, and our community have made possible. Forty-five years ago, reStart began with a simple belief: that everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Today, that belief continues to guide us as we build not only housing, but hope, opportunity, and stronger communities.

The housing challenges facing Kansas City remain significant. Demand continues to outpace supply, and too many families, seniors, youth, and individuals are struggling to find housing they can afford. The solution will require bold leadership, innovative partnerships, and sustained investment.

Fortunately, July reminds us that progress is possible.

This month, we'll cut two ribbons—but what we're really celebrating are hundreds of futures that will be rewritten because a community chose to invest in housing.

As you gather with family and friends this Independence Day, I invite you to reflect on what freedom truly means.

For thousands of our neighbors, freedom begins with a key.

A key that unlocks safety.

A key that unlocks opportunity.

A key that unlocks a future.

Because the strongest investment we can make in Kansas City is ensuring that everyone has a place to call home.

A stronger Kansas City—and a freer Kansas City—starts with a home for everyone.
