February is the month when we talk a lot about love—love for our partners, our families, our friends, and our city. And here in Kansas City, we don’t do anything halfway. Whether we’re painting the town red for our favorite football team or proudly supporting local businesses, KC knows how to show up with heart.
But this month, I want to talk about a different kind of love.
A kind that is quieter, harder, and more powerful: the love we show when we ensure every child, every parent, and every neighbor has a safe place to call home.
Because here’s the truth:
You cannot build a thriving community on unstable ground. You cannot build hope on exhaustion. And you cannot build success without a home.
At reStart, we see firsthand what stability can do. When a family finally gets a key to their own space, everything shifts. Stress levels fall. Children sleep better. Parents can focus on work. Youth begin to imagine a future beyond survival. That single moment—the turning of a key—creates a ripple effect that touches education, workforce, health, and public safety.
Kansas City is a place that believes in lifting our neighbors. We pride ourselves on being a community that takes care of its own. And yet:
Thousands of KC families are on the brink of homelessness.
Youth and Senior homelessness continue to rise at alarming rates.
In 2025 alone, reStart turned away 600 families because we simply ran out of space.
This is not who we are—not as a city and not as a community.
But here’s the good news: Kansas City also knows how to rally. We’ve shown it through championship seasons, transformative civic projects, and regional collaboration. We’ve never shied away from big challenges or bold solutions.
Now, we need that same KC spirit for housing.
This February, as we talk about love, let’s widen the circle of who we include. Let’s show the kind of love that moves us from empathy to action—love that says:
“You are part of this community. Your children matter. Your future matters. And you deserve a home.”
At reStart, we are doing everything we can to meet this moment:
The Main Street Family Lodge will open in 2026, tripling our capacity for families.
Our affordable housing developments are expanding, with the goal of creating 100 new deeply affordable units in the next five years.
Youth programs are scaling, including reTreats, our social enterprise that builds workforce pathways.
But to truly shift the future of homelessness in KC, we need everyone—neighbors, businesses, policymakers, and sports fans alike.
This month, I invite you to join us in showing what it means to love this city deeply:
❤️ Volunteer ❤️ Become a monthly donor ❤️ Partner as a landlord or employer ❤️ Advocate for affordable housing ❤️ Share reStart’s mission with others
A stronger Kansas City starts with a home for everyone—and love makes room.
