March- A City That Shows Up:Kansas City’s Strength Lies in How We Care for Each Other |
March in Kansas City always feels like a turning point. Winter is loosening its grip; the city is buzzing with anticipation for spring. But March is also a time of renewal, of asking what it means to grow, to stretch, and to become a stronger version of ourselves. At reStart, that question guides our work every day: What would it look like for Kansas City to become the strongest, most compassionate version of itself? |
I believe it starts with ensuring every person—especially every child—has a place to sleep tonight. We know this: Kansas City is at a critical moment. Family homelessness is rising. Youth homelessness is reaching unprecedented levels. Working parents are falling behind not because they lack effort, but because rent is consuming more than half their income. And children are sleeping in cars, tents, and in unsafe environments across our city. But here’s what else I know: This city shows up. Always. We saw it during the pandemic, when neighbors delivered meals and checked on each other. We see it in our sports culture, where loyalty isn’t just encouraged—it’s expected. We see it when KC businesses step up to sponsor community programs or hire individuals rebuilding their lives. And now, we need that spirit more than ever.At reStart, we’re expanding our capacity to meet the rising need:
But we can’t do this alone. This moment requires all of us—because a city is strongest when everyone is included. This month, I want you to ask yourself: Where can I show up? Where can my company show up? Where can Kansas City show up?Showing up can look like:
When Kansas City shows up, transformation follows. When one family finds stability, a classroom feels the difference. When one young person gains a home, an entire future opens. When one parent secures housing, the workplace gains a reliable employee.
This is the KC I know—the KC that rises, rallies, and cares deeply. |
As we move into spring, let’s build a city where stability isn’t a privilege, but a baseline expectation. A city where a stronger Kansas City truly begins with a home for everyone. |
